Just Collect travels to see quite a few collections every month, so our show schedule is somewhat limited.  When we travel for a show, we often meet with collectors in the area that may be interested in getting a free appraisal and/or selling some or all of their collection.

We had already been to Chicago in early July when we purchased The Massive PSA Card Collection From Chicago that we wrote about over the summer.  Several weeks later we were attending The National and contacted several collectors that had expressed interest in having their collections evaluated.  One such collection was owned by a gentleman who lived just outside of Chicago.  We were very excited and looking forward to meeting with him in Chicago before we set up for The National.

Binders and Boxes

The gentleman's collection consisted of  complete Topps Football Sets from 1969 to 1989 and Fleer Basketball Sets from 1986-1989.  The older football sets were stored safely in 9-pocket pages and collector albums all the way until the 1979 set.  Additionally,  the 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Set was also stored in pages and an album and all of the basketball sets included the stickers.  The remainder of the football sets from 1980-1989 were in storage boxes or factory set boxes while the Fleer Basketball sets were in penny sleeves and then stored in toploaders.  Almost the entire collection was ungraded, although several of the key cards were PSA graded and the entire 1969 Football Set was PSA graded.  The graded cards included a PSA 9 Kenny Stabler rookie card from 1973 Topps and also had a Chicago theme with two Chicago Hall of Famer rookie cards of Topps Walter Payton in PSA 8 1976 Topps and 1986 Fleer Basketball Michael Jordan in PSA 8.

It was not surprising that the collection included a 1986 Fleer Basketball Set as this issues shows up on a regular basis, but it was nice to add a few of the subsequent issues.  The 1987 and 1988 sets feature additional Jordan cards as well as rookies of of Hall of Famers John Stockton, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman and others.

In addition to the graded football cards highlighted above, the collection included both of the U.S.F.L. Factory Sets from 1984 and 1985 which inlcuded the tought to find rookie cards of Hershel Walker, Reggie White, Steve Young, Jim Kelly and Doug Flutie.  Included in the 20 year run of Topps sets were many key rookies:  O.J. Simpson (1970), Terry Bradshaw (1971), Roger Staubach (1972), Jack Youngblood (1973), John Hannah (1974), Lynn Swann (1975), Jack Lambert (1976), Steve Largent (1977), Tony Dorsett (1978), Earl Campbell (1979), Phil Simms (1980), Joe Montana (1981), Lawrence Taylor (1982), Mike Singletary (1983), Dan Marino (1984), Warren Moon (1985) and Jerry Rice (1986).  One of the highlights was the very strong condition of the High Numbers in the 1972 Topps set.

The great thing about this collection was the consistent quality and condition of the cards.  Some great centering, strong corners and a nice fresh feel lent for a really great collection that we were happy to enter into discussion about purchasing.

Valuation and Negotiation

Ironically, the seller also had a 1969 Football Set that was PSA graded and these are usually the easiest parts of a collection to evaluate because they have an easily verifiable value.  In this case, the seller apparently put his heart and soul into building this set and the labor of love had more sentimental value to the gentleman than the actual value of the set.  We were unable to come up with a valuation and purchase offer for the graded set that met with the seller's expectations.   However, as we inspected the balance of the collection, we discussed the condition, the value and what we could offer and found that we were extremely close on value which made the negotiation and final offer very easy.

Future Shows - We Want to Meet You

Although our show schedule is limited, Just Collect will be attending the Greater Boston Sports Collectors Club show in Wilmington, MA November 2nd through the 5th, 2017. If you are interested in selling your collection, give us a call to set up an appointment!

Our Buying Philosophy

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the past decade. Although we are known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage basketball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, also!

Every collection and every collector is different and we treat EVERY collection with the respect and attention that we show for our own collections. We understand that many have put their heart and soul into building their collection. So when you're ready to sell, Just Collect understands the feelings that you're going through and we will work with you to help you reach a decision that is a WIN/WIN, because if you're not happy, we're not happy.

We Are Always Buying

Just Collect is always buying vintage sports and non-sports cards from 1879 to 1979 as well as select modern cards. If you have a collection that you are considering selling, contact us today to discuss your collection and get our industry leading purchase offer. If you have a collection that you want appraised, please contact us and we would be happy to discuss your collection and help you understand the real cash value of your collection in the current marketplace.
