  • November 10, 2016

I’ve seen a lot of sports cards in my day. In 2006 I started Just Collect and have since bought and sold more than $20 million in cards. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting thousands of hobby enthusiasts and appraising countless collections. In the baseball card world, I’ve been around the proverbial block. But every once in a while, you come across a collection that truly stops you in your tracks. Whether it’s for the rarity of the cards, the condition of the collection, or how the group was discovered, there are some memories that really stand out for me.

The South Jersey Vintage Set Collection

In early September, we were contacted by a gentleman from South New Jersey who wanted to sell his entire baseball card and memorabilia collection. The collection consisted of vintage card sets, yearbooks, programs, Super Bowl tickets, World Series tickets, autographed baseballs, and some rare autographed cuts. And when I say vintage sets, it wasn’t just a few sets from the late 1970s. It was dozens of sets, ranging  from the 1930s through the 1970s, of all sports. The second set was a 1959 Fleer Ted Williams Set, also all PSA-graded. It really is the perfect pair of sets. Ted Williams was an all-American outdoors man; the 1955 Football Set featured all-American athletes. Ted took time away from the game of baseball to serve his country in World War II; a lot of players included in the All-American set also served in war,

1894 N302 William Hickok YaleOver the years, we've seen plenty of collections come through our doors. Some are large and include tens of thousands of cards and some are just a few cards. Sometimes, they’re predominantly modern, sometimes vintage. Occasionally, we are presented with a collection that we have a great deal of interest in purchasing, but are unable to reach an agreement on price. This happened recently with a very nice collection of ten 1894 N302 Mayo’s Cut Plug Football cards. These 10 cards
