There's More To The Story

Some readers may remember our story from two months ago about the gentleman who had cigar boxes filled with 1950 Bowman Football cards and 1950 Freedom's War cards.  Well, we shared the story behind the football cards in the collection already, but there was more.

Most of the cards were from the early 1950's through the early 1960's and included a wide array of non-sport issues such as Flags of the World, Zorro, Isolation Booth, 3 Stooges, Dinosaur, Civil War News (including a display box which can be seen in the video below), Wacky Plaks, Monster Laffs Midgees singles and Monster Laffs complete panels as well as a myriad of other cards from the timeframe.

Aside from the Bowman Football cards, there was a small smattering of football cards from 1960 and 1961 and a couple of 1948 baseball cards. While this standard assortment had some value, it wasn't anything out of the ordinary.  However, the sheer volume of the Freedom's War cards was very impressive.  Several rows of cards neatly organized cards stacked in one of the cigar boxes yielded several hundred vending fresh 1950 Topps Freedom's War cards.  There were several general cards, including George Patton, George Marshall, James Doolittle, Dwight Eisnehower and Omar Bradley as well as the tougher die-cut cards.  The condition varied, but many were in near mint to mint condition. To give you an idea how rare these cards are in high-grade, the PSA population reports that only one card from the Freedom's War set has ever recieved a PSA 10 grade, while only 15 have reached the PSA 9 threshold! The majority of cards that have been graded from this set fall into the PSA 6 (EX/MT) range. So you can see why we were super-excited to see this group of cards in the higher-end of condition. The M-18 Gun Motor Carriage Die-Cut, seen below, is a very rare card and even more so in high grade. There are zero examples graded PSA 9 or PSA 10, and only one example has graded a PSA 8.

Is Bigger Better?

There were some issues that were the now standard 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", a few of the "pre-1957" larger Topps cards and a few other oddball cards.  While the Topps Freedom's War cards were the smaller size, similar to the 1948-50 Bowman issues, there were a few oversized cards in the collection as well.  The relatively scarce 1959 Topps Wacky Plaks, 1961 Topps Sports Cars and the 1963 Monster Laff Midgees Panels were all oversized (think 1964 Topps Hockey, 1965 Topps Football and 1969 and 1970 Topps Basketball).

We are still very glad that he thought enough to bring them to our Somerset, NJ office for a free appraisal. When we presented him with the payment for the collection, he was happy he brought them, too! He was more than pleased with our offer and like many other sellers, had great things to say about our process. You can read a few of what our customers have had to say about us on our Google Reviews.
