Often, we share stories about entire collections that we are fortunate to be contacted about and are able to purchase.  Sometimes, these collections are so large that small portions of them can be their own stand alone story.  A recent collection that we traveled to purchase fits this scenario like a glove . . . a hockey glove.

Are You Interested?

We were contacted by a gentleman that had inherited a collection that had been assembled by his father and his uncle.  It featured cards mostly from the early to mid 1950s and included baseball, football, non-sports and even some hockey.  He was interested in selling the collection as a whole, but wasn't too savvy about taking and forwarding pictures.  Our helpful customer service was able to work with him to get some images and a better idea of the contents of the collection.  Once we had a better idea of the contents and the value, we were able to begin preliminary discussions about the collection and eventually visited to seller at his home to reivew the collection in person and eventually reach an agreement on price and purchase the collection in its entirety.

We have featured some of the collection previously, but wanted to highlight the 1954 Topps Hockey near set that was part of this fantastic collection. Although we don't get too many calls from people with hockey collections, we are always interested in hockey collections, even those through the late 1980's.

Original Six

Anyone that has ever seen the inaugural hockey issue from Topps cannot help but notice the striking American-themed red, white and blue design construct.  Featuring a total of 60 cards depciting players from the Original Six teams of the NHL, the set represents the four United States clubs from Boston (Bruins), Chicago (Blackhawks), Detroit (Red Wings) and New York (Rangers) in addition to the two Canadian teams from Montreal (Canadiens) and Toronto (Maple Leafs).

Red, White and Blue Beauties

Printed on the standard large 2 5/8" by 3 3/4" format for early Topps cards, this premier Topps hockey issue included most of the stars of the day, buit only boasted three rookie cards; #18 Doug Mohns, #32 Camille Henry and #35 Don McKenney.  The cards fronts depict an action shot of the player over a white background. The team logo appears in either the upper right or upper left corner of the card while a facsimile autograph is prominent across the lower portion of the player's image. Capping the All-American motif, a horizonal red strip has the player's name in white text and position in black text, while just below, a blue strip has the city and team name in white.

The reverse of the cards are printed in both red and blue ink on light colored card stock, sticking with the red, white and blue theme.  A cartoon on the right side explains some general hockey termanology while a biography is printed in blue ink and a line of stats from the 1953-54 season runs along the bottom.

Many significant NHLers are included in the set including Gordie Howe, Terry Sawchuk, Dick Gamble, Gump Worsley and Milt Schmidt.

We're glad that he thought enough to contact our Somerset, NJ office for a free appraisal. When we presented him with the payment for the collection, he was happy he brought them, too! He was more than pleased with our offer and like many other sellers, had great things to say about our process. You can read a few of what our customers have had to say about us on our Google Reviews.

Our Buying Philosophy

We've run into a wide range of people and collections over the past decade. Although we are known for buying vintage sports cards and especially vintage basketball cards, we are also extremely interested in buying non-sports cards, also!
